Lip Enhancements

Our lips are most full by age 15 and during the years that follow lose volume. Additional aging increases lip length with decreasing exposure of the upper teeth. Full lips are desirable but the proportions should be maintained for best appearance. The lower lip should be larger than the upper lip. There should be some projection when seen from the profile view. A defined margin and philtrum enhances the lips as well as the smooth transition from the full center of the lip to the lateral margins.

Symmetry is important. So is a natural appearance and softness. When you smile, you want a natural curve with no bulges. During kissing, you don't want any lumps. If any substance is added to the lips, it must meet all the above criteria as well as be reversible, resorbable or removable in case you are not happy with the change, or you change your mind. The ideal substance should also be non reactive and tissue compatible. A very desirable feature would be to add small changes to achieve an ideal appearance.
We recommend that lips be enhanced with hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane. There is some inflammation following administration which resolves in 2 days. The effect is slowly diminished over several months but repeated administrations will leave a lasting improvement. We can provide this service under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia if you require it. We do not recommend use of permanent non removable fillers for enhancement. We have found that the inflatable devices or other permanent but removable devices do not have natural feel and do not enable subtle curve changes which give the best results.
